Health
Skin care
Rich in sesquiterpene derivatives, it has valuable anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic (including respiratory) properties. German Chamomile essential oil can be used as well for many skins, inflammatory or atopic disorders. During a study on atopic dermatitis, its application at 3% concentration with a carrier oil significantly reduced the overall allergic crisis such as itchy eyes, runny nose and rash, reduced hives and eczema and swelling caused by insect or spider bites.
German Chamomile essential oil has effective action in cases of skin allergy, dermatitis or itching thanks to the presence of chamazulene, alpha bisabolol and alpha bisabolol oxide, with potent anti-inflammatory effects. This oil acts as an antagonist of histamine receptors, thus preventing allergic manifestations.
It can also be used in the case of insect bites, molluscum contagiosum and chickenpox.
Antispasmodic
A preliminary study [1] funded by Oxford Natural Products claims that German, or blue, chamomile has the potential to alleviate menstrual cramps.
Sedative
German Chamomile can be used in the treatment of sleep disorders and anxiety, being calming and even sedative, depending on the state of fatigue, helping to fall asleep and improving the quality of sleep.
Its calming and anxiolytic activity has been shown to be similar to benzodiazepines, that is, through the regulation of GABA receptors, but without the side effects of these.
Digestive problems
German Chamomile essential oil promotes the functional activity of the stomach and can be used to treat heartburn, gastric ulcers and poor digestion.
Other uses
It has healing properties, helps to reduce inflammation, and can be applied to abscesses and bedsores. In addition, German Chamomile essential oil has already been shown to be effective in cases of vaginitis, cystitis and irregular or painful menstruation.
